Gar-Dur® Specifications & Approvals

We’re often asked which Federal and Military specifications and approvals apply to Gar-Dur® Plastic. The following is a brief listing.

ASTM:

D-4020-96
D-4020-01
D-4020-05a and the current standard specification for UHMW Polyethylene, D-4020-11

FDA:

GAR-DUR® is in compliance with FDA regulations as listed in Federal Register under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic act of 1958, as amended for food contact use provided it is used unmodified and in accordance with good manufacturing practices.

FEDERAL:

L-P-390C: Plastic, molding and extrusion material, polyethylene and Copolymers (low, medium and high density).

ISO:

ISO 11542-1:2001 PLASTICS: Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (PE-UHMW) moulding and extrusion materials. Designation system and basis for specifications.

ISO 11542-2:1999 PLASTICS: Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (PE-UHMW) moulding and extrusion materials. Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties.

MILITARY:

MIL-P-23536: Plastic sheets, virgin and borated polyethylene.

MIL-P-21922: Plastic rods and tubes polyethylene

MIS-31836: Missile Command Specification for UHMW

ISO 11542-2:1999 PLASTICS: Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (PE-UHMW) moulding and extrusion materials. Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties.

NSF:

Gar-Dur® is approved by the National Sanitation Foundation. To obtain NSF approval, a manufacturer must submit a unit which contains Gar-Dur® Plastic (e.g. a component in a refrigerator or drinking fountain).

OSHA:

Gar-Dur® is not considered hazardous as defined by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200.

UL:

There is not current listing for Gar-Dur®, however previous UL-94 testing resulted in a V-2 rating for unmodified Gar-Dur® and a V-0 rating with sufficient flame retardant additives.

USDA:

Gar-Dur® has USDA approval for meat and poultry in food handling applications

NIST:

Gar-Dur® UHMW Polymer Relationship – I.V. to M.W.

Molecular Weights Available in Polyethylene

This chart shows the various molecular weights available in polyethylene. Enhanced performance characteristics are directly related to molecular weight. When comparing the abrasion resistance, the higher the molecular weight (I.V.) the greater the wear life. Gar-Dur®Gar-Dur® UHMW offers exceptional wear resistant properties.

Gar-Dur® is made from the highest molecular weight polyethylene that is consistently available. ASTM (D-4020/92) requirements for a product to be classified as true UHMW must be 3.1 million or greater.

Gar-Dur® is 4.2 million or greater.

Physical Properties of Gar-Dur®

Physical Properties of Gar-Dur®

This chart shows the physical properties of Gar-Dur®. It should be noted that Gar-Dur® UHMW has the highest impact resistance of all thermal plastics. Gar-Dur® has outstanding low temperature impact strength plus high energy absorption. As an example of toughness, Gar-Dur® UHMW is used in mallet faces and hammer heads.

Gar-Dur® Chemical and Corrosion Resistance

This chart illustrates the chemical resistance of Gar-Dur® UHMW. Strong oxidizing agents and most aggressive chemicals have virtually no effect. Gar-Dur® does not absorb moisture, bacterial, fungus growth and ice will not adhere to its surface. Gar-Dur® is an ideal material for parts operating in a chemical and corrosive environment such as sewage treatment and chemical processing plants.
